Do they use the same prescription methods for eyesight over the world?

For instance, I'm a size 12 shoe in England but in Europe or America, it's different.

What's the story with glasses?

No problem at all to take your full UK prescription to the States and have some specs made. Several of my family have done this. With the rip-off price of frames and lenses in the UK, anyone visiting the States should think about getting new specs while they're there. Half the cost or less. There are plenty of 1 hour outlets, tho' if you want an anti-reflective coating it might take a day or two.
I havn't had glasses from a UK optician for some years; I have my eyes tested (free) in Cyprus, and get my specs there within 24 hours at half the price I'd pay here - even less, sometimes. Designer frames - if that's your thing - are also about half the UK price.
