The word first appeared in print in an F Scott Fitzgerald story, 'This Side of Paradise', published in 1920. Perhaps it was around for a year or two prior to that, but certainly no more than 90 years ago. It refers to the shape of the garment when laid down flat...ie it's a T-shape.

I have no idea who 'invented' it, but it is, after all, little more than a sleeved vest such as men had worn for ages prior to the 1920s..

Molly great link.Quizzy would be proud of you.
Tartan, I can't quite see how it can have 'started during World War II' - ie post 1939 - given that F Scott Fitzgerald actually used the word 'T-shirt' in a story published in 1920, as I said. I might buy 'World War I.

Trinity, As I said earlier, given that the T-shirt is virtually identical to a short-sleeved vest/undershirt and that that has existed for yonks, I very much doubt that you'll succeed in finding an 'inventor'. Ask who invented the saxophone and we can tell you...ask who invented the drum and we're in trouble. Sorry, but good luck in your search.
