Can anyone tell me which ones (other than 1881) are online and free to search?

Online are 1841-1901 but only the 1881 is free. As far as I know, all the others are on subscription sites or pay-per-view.

You may find some areas have been transcribed free by individuals, try googling the place you want and the year.

Thanks a lot. A lot of these sites are in pounds which is expensive in NZ dollars.

Presuming you mean England & Wales census? If so the censuses from 1851 to 1901 (and soon 1841) are all free to search at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

The information of course is limited, but it can give you some vital clues. There are various other databases that you can search for free, including the Birth, Death & Marriage registers. The 1881 England & Wales censuses are free to view but you would have to subscribe to see the expanded records for any of the others.

If you wish you can start a 2-week free trial here once you feel you've got enough clues to make it worth while.

If you are looking for UK ancestors its also probably worth registering with http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/ you can search other people's trees & post on noticeboards. I've found dozens of relatives & ancestors on there (going back as far as the 1500s).

I am all set up at genesreunited and use it daily. I was born in the UK and moved here as a child and my husbands father was English too. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.
