Human nature VHG. I remember (in the 70's I think) a newspaper started up in New York (I think) that only published 'good' news. It lasted about a week, 'cos no one would buy it...people want 'death and destruction'. Odd world we live in!

Perhaps on the positive side we should be thankful that this sort of thing occurs so rarely these days in the West that it becomes World News.

Because this is the News section, and the story is being carried on the TV news.

I want to know about it but I don't usually watch the news at this time of day.

In July this year, wasn't there a similar train derailment in Spain, caused by taking a bend too fast?

Fortunately in this New York crash, there wasn't the same huge numbers of injuries and lost lives .

Terrible to hear about....and just a wee bit of relief that it is not a train line that my immediate family is likely to be on.
And VHGs comment was a bit insensitive....

The metro-north commuter system is equipped for in-cab signalling, and all passenger trains are equipped to receive the cab signal; this displays the appropriate block signal in the cab. All trains are fitted with Automatic Train Control (ATC). ATC enforces the speed dictated by the cab/block signal by means of a penalty brake application, if the driver fails to obey it.
