Today is day 3 off the fags.
I am managing quite well with the assistance of nicotine patches (albeit the strongest ones)
I have tried to quit many times before with varying degrees of success. This time I am determined, as I approach my 40th birthday.
I want to be smoke free because of my 2.1/2 year old son who is very active and likes to go swimming, play football etc. I don't want to be gasping for breath every five minutes whilst playing with him.

I would like to know fellow ABers accounts on how they quit and, more importantly, how best to deal with the sudden urges for a fag, that come on with little or no warning.

I like you tried numerous times to stop years ago - finally stopped about 15 years ago -you have to really want to stop, nicotine patches are all v well if they help - I used mint flavoured nicotine chewing gum for about 2 weeks - but it's all WILL POWER really. When I felt the urge for a fag I had a constant supply of satsumas and had one of those instead. If I can do it you can, I smoked 40-50 a day !! but only low calorie Silk Cut - find things to do with your hands - and good luck, but I'm sure itfyou are determined you will succeed. all the best.

I quit about 15years ago, only wish I'd done it before.
It is down to will power but you sound very motivated.
The satsumas sound a good idea as it also gives you something to do with your hands. I had to avoid any situation where I might of been tempted so it helped not being surrounded by other smokers.
Good luck. Plan to spend the money you have saved on something nice for you and your family, its amazing how quickly it mounts up!!!
Hi Hope you're still off the fags. I stopped smoking 2 years ago after numerous attempts. The best thing for me was reading 'The Easy way to stop smoking' by Allan Carr. I think it brain washed me but I haven't been tempted once. The main thing is to be positive. Stop thinking you're giving something up, making a sacrifice etc, think I have stopped and hurrah! I'm free. He also says imagine you have a nicotine monster inside you who's pleading to be fed. If you feed it, it grows, if you don't it dies! Stay positive!! It can be done!!

I cannot stress how easy it was for me to quit by having hypnosis.
I tried patches a few times which were fine untill i took them off !! so I decided to give hypnosis a try and thank god i did it has changed my life. I smoked 20 a day and wanted to quit for my young kids, I was hypnotised nearly 3 months ago and have not had any cravings at all since. It is now as if I have never smoked . I know it does not work for everyone but if you are positive and really want to quit, it is worth a go. My husband quit using Champix tablets, but he still gets cravings. Best of luck xx
best incentive is you will be able to run around without getting breathless and you will not stink!! which you don't actually realise because your nose is not sensitive to it anymore..best of luck keep with it ....
