Watched this for two weeks now and can't believe how out of touch he is! Last week he paid £18 for a joint. This week he paid £28 for a half shoulder of pork! He said it would feed 8 people with some over, but how many days would you be eating pork? Does he also not realise that £28 is over half of what some families have to spend on their entire shop for the week?

While my finances are a little better now, I've spent most of the past few years trying to live on £10 per week for food (with £15 being regarded as a 'luxury week'). He reckons that 16% of all cheese bought is thrown out - 1) - who throws out cheese & 2) who measures the amount that's thrown out? He is starting to get right on my wick.
My joints come from the Co-op on offer.
Sunday, roast dinner.
Mon or Tues, cold meat salad.
Wed/Thur, curry.
Not dear at all.
Forgot to add, any leftovers - doggy food.
In the early 80's when I was as poor as a church mouse I would buy ham hocks, 2 for 60p. Pressure cook them and then skin and defat. We would then have several meals from them. T'was a horrible job though skinning and defating.
Buenchico, I used to manage on £10 per week 40 years ago and that was including home grown veg. I don't think I could do it now, you should write a recipe book, it would be an eye opener to most of the population.
I feed my family (and I have five children) on about £90. This includes veg, fruit, treats, fruit juice, packed lunches, etc. No one goes without anything or has to eat anything they don't like. I don't do ready made stuff (too expensive for all of us) and that includes at least 3kg of cheese a week (at £15). Although I am lucky in that I don't work so have the time to make stuff, not so easy if you are working.
I would love to know how to make low budget meals which are also slimming as we are both trying to lose weight. I buy whole chickens when reduced at the end of the day at Tescos but low cost mince is full of fat and cheap beefburgers - yuk, forget them! Cheap steak pies are fattening due to the pastry. It strikes me that it is very costly being on a diet, fruit is expensive and so also are vegetables (but we grow our own blackberries and runner beans so these cost nothing) What can we eat to watch our weight and also watch our pennies? Will be very interested to hear your suggestions .............. ;)

When I buy value mince, I fry it off first and that gets rid of the fat.

Sorry Ann, don't do slimming meals. My children all look a bit scrawny, but they eat like it's going our of fashion. You can get reasonably priced freah fruit & veg at Asda & Aldi (I know there's not much of a price difference).
Ann, make your own burgers, you can google the recipes and they taste so much better than the crap they sell in supermarkets
