What's good to do with children (aged 7 and 8) over the Christmas and new year period in NYC?

Ice skating at the Rockerfella Centre or Central Park springs to mind. There are usually christmas shows at Radio City which are a bit camp but fun.
Lots of fantastic Christmas window displays, there was one on 5th Ave that you had to queue to see! Then there's the Santa grotto in Macys. I'd try and get a good travel book, with a big kids section to help you out though. And don't forget to wrap up warm, it can be very cold in the winter, I've been twice in winter, and once it was minus 12.
