I have one of the original iPods (not a mini etc) and I have iTunes loaded onto my computer.

I may well be being very stoopid but how do I get the display on my iPod to only show artists of full cds that are loaded on? What I mean is that I don't want every artist on every compilation CD to show up as I scroll through the list of artists alphabetically. I am bad at remembering the name of albums so I search by artist. However, when I am scrolling through to a particular artist I find that I am passing by a whole heap of unknown bodies who are listed because they are on a compilation.

Can I change this somehow or can compilation artists be shown seperately or some kind of option like that?

Any advice appreciated.

When you transfer albums etc over to the ipod you must be selecting the whole album? On the left where it says name there is a little blue box, have only the ones ticked that you want to transfer to your ipod/library - THEN plug in your ipod and it will only transfer the ticked items and you won't get loads of unwanted tunes.

Great licklechap - thanks.

however, if you do still want all your files on the iPod, then I'm afraid that there's no way getting past what you talk about. One of the more annoying aspects of the iPod.

I got 2 pieces of advice from the folks in the Music section of answerbank. They suggested that I :

1) make up a playlist (but i'm not sure why or how this will help)

2) make sure that the compilation tracks are marked as 'part of a compilation' by right clicking and then going to 'get info'

Any thoughts on those suggestions?

shivvy: the latter works fine for iTunes, but certainly for my iPod, does not work on the device itself.
