It's now been 2 years since I had a brain anurysm and a stroke. On holiday this year MrW wants to go by train up an eleven and a half thousand foot mountain. How safe is this for me? Dr doesn't really know and my platelets are at 45. many thanks for answers love Wheaten

good evening wheaten i concur with the others, it is just not worth the risk mr wheaten should understand, and accept this if he still wants to go up, it'll have to be on his own - just make sure he brings you back some great pictures/video

wheaten ....just a few questions.

Why is your platelet count low?

At high altitudes, the low O2 concentration of the air, would most likely lower still further you platelet count and also increase the chance of aggregation (clotting)

I wouldn't chance it.
my reply went into the ether

No medical background here, but if you're not happy about the trip up the mountain, don't go.
How are you getting to your destination? Are you flying?

If I'm honest, too much alcohol over past years, have stopped now but my blood doesnt'clot well anyway hence the brain bleed so would't it decrease clotting more? I don't intend to bang my head. But Mr W will be annoyed if I don't go, will tell him I should't. thank you Squad love wheaten

Can you not go on holiday with him but not on the mountain train journey?

My other half understands that I can never go in an aeroplane because of my lung disease, he has accepted this and would never be annoyed, as far as he is concerned my health is more important than a holiday, I'm sure your hubby feels the same about you!
11,500" is quite high and you would feel the effects more when going by train than you would on foot because you are ascending faster. I probably wouldn`t risk it.

thank you everyone for your sensible answers, I will talk to MrW. to make things more fun I recently had a hip replacement! and use a walker and wheelchair to get around! Maybe his plan is to get me up the moutain and push my wheelchair and me down it! I must admit he's been a star since everythings happened love wheaten
Having been to the highest station in Europe (in Switzerland), I can tell you that breathing and moving about is quite difficult even if you are in the best of health. So, if you're not A1 healthwise, I wouldn't risk it.

yes gingjbeer, that's where we're going, I've seen that Bradshaw trains bloke go up it and he felt lightheaded MrW doesn't cope well with 'high up' but I'm usually ok when in good heath. then I set my hair on fire and have forehead scarring oh happy days. MrW should have married an elegant English rose instead of a prickly Scottish thistle like me but round here the fun never ends! I'll go now and stop rambling, cheesey chips and beans for tea Which MrW shall make as I'm not allowed in th kitchen!love wheaten.
Question Author
Well, up and down the mountain, no problems but Mr W felt woozy and light headed so nothing to do with the beer he had up top then?
