can my son rent my council house?

I am moving out of my council house, to buy a new property.

i have lived there with my son who is 24 for 24 years, Can he continue to live there, if he pays the rent etc?

I'd say it depends on which council you are with and the size of the house. If your son would be living alone in a 3 bedroomed house then his chances are less likely. Call your local office asap, don't wait until you are ready to leave.

if he is on the electral roll at your house and on the council records as living there with you,then yes he can

Before I bought my council house I applied for my daughters name to go jointly on rent book .I was told that joint tenancy was not allowed with a son or daughter.I wanted this so as my daughter wouldnt be homeless when I passed on. But is not like having your own house and being passed down to your son he would probably be offered a flat or more than likely have to go on the list as there are families waiting on houses. only YOUR council can tell you this as all councils are different. My daughter was also registered as living here

Am I the only one that things council houses should given to those in desperate need, not just be given to a relative???

Surely he should get a private tenancy elsewhere if you're moving out?

I'd say my son is in desperate need, as the price of houses are ridiculous, and theres no way he can get on the property ladder!

He could rent privately was my point, therefore freeing up your house to someone homeless/unable to work etc.

My son does have an illness which prevents him from working, his girlfriend would be moving in also, so they couldn't afford to rent privately.
