Can I put one into the mains circuit, or do I have to run a seperate higher-rated cable?

Heated towel rails will use less power than an elecric fire so I can't see a dedicated cable would be needed. Make sure you obey the regs re zoning electrical stuff though.

Thank you OG
Crusty .......... since towel rails normally draw less than 1 amp, they can be connected to a lighting circuit or a socket ring circuit via a fused spur with a 3amp fuse.

As OG has pointed out, Google "Bathroom Zones" to make sure it's sited properly.

Under the latest regs, bathrooms should be protected by an RCD. As this is an addition to the system, although you are allowed to do it yourself, it should follow the latest regs.

Do check your Consumer Unit for RCD protection.

Thanks TB. I'd better check my zones then, including the errogenous ones:-)
;o))))
If its to be installed in a bath/shower room then it is notifiable under part P of the building regs...dont shoot the messenger.
BRIGHT SPARK is correct...........unless it was fitted before Jan 2005, if you know what I mean.
I know what you mean GW...however cable harmonisation was introduced in late 04 so unless you use the old red/black cable the wiring police will know :-)
Too true, they're always barging into my house every day checking. :-(
Apologies to all. His Brightness is quite correct, as always ;o)

I didn't think it through. Of course bathroom and kitchen locations are notifiable.
I was getting all concerned about the RCD requirement, and completely forgot.
That's my excuse anyway. :o)))
Has Mrs O been pestering you again TB....:-O
Haha ............... it's Craft48 as well now, Brighty .......... since I helped her to change a fuse ;o)
...was it notifiable TB
BS ............... you're not going to let this one go are you? ;o)))

I think Crafty is notifiable though ;o)
