Can anyone tell me why a friends computer keeps going off line for no apparant reason, they have broadband but not sure who their ISP is. They have explored the more obvious possibilities but it's driving them mad. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The PC may be shutting the modem down after a while. Try this:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/37ba5ce7-005c-4ff1-ae0e-ca7a5b779adc1033.mspx
from Microsoft help, when you get to the device manager pick the network Adaptors bit and click on the power management, then it should let you uncheck a bit that says allow windows to turn this device off to save power or something similar (Im at work this is from memory!!)
Its helped me before.

Ive been having trouble with my DSL line dropping, forcing me to manually connect it every now and then. A BT engineer came out and said it was something to do with the local phone server/hub (what ever!) and would be solved in the near future nothing I could do!!

Hope this helps!!

How can they not know who their ISP is? Don't they get a bill each month?

David,it's not they who don't know who their ISP is, it's me!! perhaps I worded my question badly! I think its Virgin but not entirely sure but whoever it is,they have taken the problem up with them without much joy!
