Just been watching two rooks/crows ganging up on a wood pigeon perched in a tree. Is this normal behaviour? Can't say I've noticed before.

Yep, crows ( and members of the crow family, magpies ect ) do mob other birds.
Couple of years ago, hooded crows attacked and killed a buzzard up here in Gairloch Wester Ross.
