Or rather one in the mouth of a former heavy smoker and drinker. Any cause for concern?

Yes.........I have never heard of mouth polyps as such.

A polypoidal lesion in the mouth however is cause for concern.....particularly in a former heavy smoker and drinker.

Well, I used the word, 'polyp' in a layman's sense. I'll go and see the quack.

TY. Are the arrangements for the fee still the same, a plain brown envelope to the receptionist on the way out?
LOL....don't bother with the envelope.....Mrs sqad will be at the door.....it will end up in her pocket anyway.
I agree with Sqad that any new lesion of the oral cavity needs to be diagnosed, especially those witha history of heavy smoking and drinking. However, you would be best going to see your dentist who would have much more experience of soft tissues lesions of the mouth.
definately dentist......... they are well equiped to spot any abnormalities ( oral ),
