I'm sitting alone in a van in the middle of nowhere at a level crossing, no houses nearby, no lights for miles and I've got to walk half a mile down the track with a torch for company.

Would whistling scare or attract a lion?

Whistle, beat the scrub on the sides of the path with a stick. Flash the torch from side tot side. Will also scare away the snakes, jackels and porcupines.

You could always sing that song from The King and I :- Whenever I feel afraid
I hold my head erect and whistle a happy tune so that no-one will suspect I'm afraid! Then whistle the afore mentioned song!
You never know cupid. The lion might join in. He and ELVIS could sing a duet.
