i can try to help you ..

reason for this ? ie..money concerns / his work is no good / you can manage /etc....
How does this sound? (assuming of course that what I have suggested, is true!)

Dear ***gardener,

As you know, I have always appreciated the good work you have done for us in keeping our garden in order.

However, due to personal circumstances, I regret that I can no longer retain your services, and therefore I am giving you notice that we will not require a gardener after (date).

If you should ever require a reference for future gardening jobs, please do get in touch with me.

Many thanks for all your help over the past *** years.
Dear gardener,

I regret to tell you that due to a change in circumstances I will no longer require your services but I do appreciate all the work you have done for me.

Please let me know if I can provide references for you.

Many thanks

yes they sound good! thankyou!! His prices are ridiculous, he did 3 days work, not full days coming at 1pm one day then at lunchtime the other 2 and he billed me £320, he always makes sarcastic comments about my "fancy" car and people who live in big houses, insinuating i should be able to afford whatever he charges me. I don't want to fall out with him and have got another gardener who is miles cheaper and whos work is the same standard, so i shall write him a letter today thanks for the advice :-)

hahaha old geezer thats want i want to say LOL
Might I respectfully suggest the work of Dave Thorne.........

Incidentally, should anyone want to pay me £320 for three days work then I will promise to keep my usual sarcastic comments to myself.
hows about the Alan Sugar charm school; "YOU'RE FIRED!"
Question Author
haha Duncer i like the link!!! i would love to point my finger at him and say you're fired but i'm spineless so i'll just post a letter!!
Why don't you give it to him?
Tell him at his prices you can't afford a stamp. Quite frankly if someone was ripping me off like that I'd tell him straight.
Although retired I still do jobs for people, charge them all the same, (£10 ph) and charge them by the hour.
Any time I don't work I don't charge.
Duncer am I going out with you?
Tongue in cheek, how about taking inspiration from the letter written to the bank inThe Young Ones, an overdraft extension.

Dear Fascist B*stard,
Give us some money,
May the seed of your loin bear fruit in the belly of your woman,
Love,
Neil.
It doesn't sound to me like you need to consider his feelings,£320 for 3 days work, plus he's sarcastic, just tell him you don't need his attitude!
