My niece broke her arm today and is back from hospital brandishing a very handsome cast.
I am going over tomorrow anyway for our mum's 70th birthday day.
I need to bring something to give her (niece) but will only have a short stop at Victoria station. I am told she has finished with colouring books and now likes to read, so can you suggest anything I can pick up for her that is likely to be found in WHSmiths?

Nursery rhyme books, The Gruffalo books, Peppa Pig, Hungry Caterpillar etc
Yeah the Gruffalo books are lovely, good choice :)
Sorry meant to say some of those may be a bit young for her. My 2 year old nephew has those books and he loves them. I think so long as they are colourful and fun then she will love them. You can also get Princess themed books which appeal to little girls :)
How about a couple of comics?
Janet and Allan Ahlberg's Peepo, Each Peach Pear Plum, Funny Bones, Burglar Bill etc. There's a lot of titles by these authors which might suit.
I'd also like to suggest Martin Waddell's books Can't you sleep Little bear but that might be better for a bedtime story to be read to her, he also wrote one called Farmer Duck which could also be suitable, and another called the Park in the Dark, my own daughter loved these and I loved reading them to her.

Thank you all. I think that all the classics are already there for the kids. Puzzled you have a great idea, which comics? (mother has banned The Beano - not sure why).
Question Author
Which comics would they like, children of that age?
get her some activity books theres a really good cbeebies magazine its around £4 but keeps our little one occupiedx
There are loads of comics with stickers in and plastic tatt on the front (don't get the obviously girlie ones as the tatt is usually make-up based (which moght not go down so well with her parents) and the content is not suitable IMO). The ones based on CBeebies programmes are usually quite good, there are stories and things to do (things to make, handwriting practise (assuming see hasn't broken her handwriting arm), etc). Keep an eye on the price of them though, as some of the ones in packs cost about £4!
Depends what she likes - Hello Kitty, Cbeebies, Disney, Postman Pat. Beano is too old for her I would have thought. Pick what you might like - you may be reading it to her!

Thanks again, I will trawl the stands and probably chose the tackiest, pinkest one to give and no doubt read it to myself! 4 quid's probably about acceptable under the circumstances. Need to get the other two a token gift as well so I think chocolates will suffice.
Comics are a treat in this house - 5 x £4 a go! (eldest takes the cash instead).
I think comics are way too expensive, had a shock last time i went to buy one for my little boy, i persuaded him to buy some chocolate instead lol
ask at the shop if they can recomend a book. if you buy a comic. someone else might have already bought that copy, as im guessing your niece is currently being spoilt rotten. Hope she is ok and hope your mum has a lovely birthday x
i have never yet met a child who didnt like peppa pig (personally i hate her - she's rude, slefish an horrible to her dad) but they do a pp magazine with stickers
i loathe peppa pig but mi loves her (my toddler) especially the one of peppas voice artist who hisses certain letters drives me to distraction i find myslef saying say please to the tv sometimes!
