put in the ground = plant. Ain = own in Scottish dialect.

I am really trying to learn how to work out clues like these but do not think I would ever have worked out the plantain answer.

Oh that is clever. I was so sure it must need "berry" in the answer I couldn't think of anything else.

Thanks for the explanation. Got to admit I could never have found that answer as I am not able to find a mel hammer anywhere so thank you for the amazing answer ... it certainly would have defeated me.
