I am going to buy myself a camera. Need a very simple basic camera that I can plug into my computer to put photos on. Built in flash and one that takes brilliant pictures despite my lack of artistic flair and technical knowledge. Any suggestions? Please no technical details as that goes right over my head! Also whats a memory card - do they come with the camera and if not do I need one?

Argos are flogging off some very easy Canon Digital cameras at the minute, just replaced my wee pocket one.

This is a wee cracker for the money and will have everything you need:

They use SD memory cards you can pick up pretty cheap, the camera has no internal memory so the card act like a film though depending on what size you buy the cards can hold hundreds of images.

I only use one of these to have in my pocket, i have a big collection of Canon DSLR's and lenses as well. You can't go wrong with a Canon

sometimes you can buy a package where you get a memory stick with the camera (amazon.co.uk and play.com). Usually they are separate. Pansonic Lumix and Nikon Coolpix are among the top brands. I use a Fujifilm EXR 200 (And I'm a complete technophobe - I get on OK with it).

Camera, 8GB memory card (You'll get LOADS of pics on it) and card reader for £97.11

Same deal, but cheaper than the red option
they may come with a memory card - read the ads. Some have a small amount of memory themselves, but not a lot, so you will almost certainly need one. Get a 4GB or 8GB one. There'll be a slot to drop it in.

Some have batteries you recharge, others will be ordinary ones you replace. Decide what's most convenient for you.

What sort of photos will you be taking? Most cameras zoom in quite a bit; some zoom a lot, wich may be handy if you want to take photos of people from a distance. All will have flashes, but none are really all that good in taking photos in dim light.

Mostly of my dogs out on a walk or doing cute stuff at home - prefer not to have to use different things just want to point and shoot and see what I have got, then put them on the computer. I had one with batteries and they only seemed to last for one session. I see people using cameras and they just seem to hold them in midair and click. What do you do with a memory card?

the memory card stores photos. When you've downloaded them to your computer, you can just delete them from the card and reuse it. You don't ever have to take it out of the camera if you don't want.

Every camera is required by law to have 3000 functions you never need. Just put it on auto as SC says and click away.
You say that you want to take good brilliant pictures, well, to take good pictures which will get compliments from friends, you need to know about the `Rule of Thirds, which is easy to remember. It means simply, don`t have horizons bang in the middle of the photo, always try to have it a third either from the top or bottom of the frame. This is why you will see good photographers holding their hands together to compose their scene.
Your local library has good books for beginners.

Not gonna happen I'm afraid, I'm a point and click photographer and hope that something appears in the frame! What I really want is to know what camera you would buy your granny!
Which's best buy is a Nikon Coolpix P300 @ £189.

The best under £100 is Olympus SZ-20
whats a memory card??? wow lol.
i would go for a camera which has a lot of auto functions on it. why not pop into a currys or jessops and see what advise they can give you. have fun camera searching!
Lankeela, nearly all the cheap cameras will do what you want with regards to ease of use, just set it to auto and click away. You will be disappointed with many snaps and you will love others but they are free in the sense of no developing so take thousands of snaps and delete the ones you dont want.

Your memory card is just like a big sim card for your camera, it just holds all your photos, you can usually hold thousands of pics on a memory card depending on the size of your memory card.
Do you not have a camera function on your phone?
Question Author
Yes but they always come out dark or out of focus. I am afraid I am one of those who only want to make phone calls with a phone! Is there not a camera that is basic and already set on 'automatic' - I don't want all the bells and whistles. Think I'll go to Woolworths and stock up on the throwaway ones.
sounds like you need to know, at the very least, how to focus and how to use the flash. Pretty well all cameras will have an automatic mode that does this for you. It will often involve a small dial on the top that you turn to "automatic"; but it may involve going through a menu on the screen. But these shouldn't mean huge learning curves, honest.
