It doesn't bother me at all really. If they didn't know your name, how else would they refer to you?

We used to say, "Who's she, the cat's mother?" if anyone referred to someone as just 'she'.

JD, your reply made me lol. x
Its horrible, especially as it generally means you're being talked about.
I used to manage a large office, one of the male telephone advisors was a bit camp. A customer rang me to complain about the young woman who was offhand and called him love throughout the conversation I didn't have the nerve to tell the customer it was a man who had answered his call. Then I had the task giving the lad a quick lesson in telephone etiquette. He was mortified to be mistaken for a female.

I had several Army mates in my younger days. Their wives main complaints were when they had appointments they were referred to as wife of so and so. If a sergeant's wife came in after a corporal's wife she would always be seen first. This was 30 years ago, maybe things have changed. I doubt it though.
no.

I wouldn't be offended, but I can't remember the last time it happened. I'm more offended if someone refers to me by the wrong name altogether (which I'm quite good at, having a terrible memory for names).
