There was a man talking about a book he has written on the Titanic. His grandfather was a musician and was drowned. the book deals with the way the different classes were dealt with:
Women & children first meant first & second class women and children.
100 oer cent of women in steerage died.
Half the children on board died - mainly in steerage.
His grandfather's wages were stopped at 2am when the ship went down.
White Star Line charged his grandmother for the cost of his brass buttons
She was asked to pay cargo fees to bring his body back from Nova Scotia - she couldn't afford it.
At the end this man made the point that the wealthy looked after themselves and everyone else got nothing - that it is still the same today.
It looks like a fascinating read!

I think he should have been paid till the end of his shift and as for his brass buttons she should have stuck them up the White star line managers nose.

She couldn't get the buttons because his body was taken to Nova Scotia and when she asked for the body they said she had to pay the going rate for cargo!! being single and with a baby she couldn't afford it. when she went to the father's parents they didn't want to know as they weren't married. that was why he went on board - to save up enough to get married.
There was such a stigma then, so different from now. I wouldn't want to go back to the stigma that the children had if they were illegitimate. My nan wouldn't let me talk to a friend because her parents were divorced and that was in the 1950's!!
