This may have been discussed already so sorry if it has. Why is there so much debate about whether it's wrong or right to wear poppies this year? I've never seen so much of a fuss made about them before. Why can't people just be free to wear one if they want to and people left alone if they chose not to?

No Ludwig it's because I'm daring to challenge the perceived wisdom that jaydah's so neatly encapsulated.

I get challenged for my view - I don't stop people and challenge them about their red poppy.

You're the ones obsessed with people sharing the acceptable view
jake, daring ? hahaha

A lady from RBL came round to the house on Sunday night selling poppies. I gave her a fiver and asked if I could have 3, one for each person in the house. She presented me with an array of all sorts of different styled poppies (all red ones) and arm bands. I chose 3 traditional pin on poppies as for me they continue to represent my thoughts and I wear my poppy with fallen british soldiers of recent conflicts in mind too. My personal opinion is that other items are more to do with either fashion or trying to change the original idea of what the poppy stands for. As I said, that's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
// no tolerance for people who dare to have a different opinion - not allowed - our children must be "educated" to think the same was as us - they must not be allowed to think differently //

Which ironically is EXACTLY the argument against politically correctness.

Not at all - refer back to your question on Jon Snow where I say he should be left alone to either wear a poppy or not, as he sees fit.
Dulce et decorum est..... however we must NEVER forget sacrifices made then or now and give thanks for the bravery of others, i would not be so brave i am sure, and to give a few pennies to help the casualties of today's war is NOTHING
Jake, I didn't say you used the phrase 'glorifying war', but I think it's sad that even in remembrance there is conflict.
Look at any serviceman Jake then you'll know what daring and challenge really mean.
Rowan, there are already permanent pins and wristband available on the RBL poppy shop website. Anything which spreads the message is good.
I've decided for the sake of my tenuous sanity to stay away from this subject.

I'm not even fully reading through the threads; however, I *am* playing an informal game of 'cliche-bingo' with myself.

So, if someone could let me know when these words/phrases/statements appear, I think I'll have a full-house.

"Jingoistic"
"Nationalistic"
"I'll wear a red poppy...........Germans at the Cenotaph"
Something to do with "Suez" or "Aden" (but only negatively)
In fact anything that rather sneers at the reasons behind/for the 'Remembrance' period on both a national and a personal level.

Thanks............

(I can give you some pointers as to where you are more likely to find them.........if you *really* need me to).
We donated to the poppy fund today and wore our poppies even though in our environment (N.I] it is quite controversial! You can tell from the poppy wearers which religion they are, sad! Thank goodness we seen beyond that and respected the war dead and the brave military still giving their lives to make us all feel safer!
because they are all high on opium.....
^^What???
