Any recommendations? I'm looking for a weekend break with hubbie in Sept - we like good scenery and long walks. Ta

Why not buy a couple of books/guides about the Peak District?

There are loads on Amazon, many at least than £10.

That way you can read up on the area and find the best places to go.

Here is a list

I have not walked much in the Peak District, but one amazing walk I did was to see both Gordale Scar AND Malham Cove in one walk.

Gordale Scar is an amazing "cut" through the rocks that has to be seen to be believed. More here

Malham Cove is a limestone pavement, again an amazing site. More here

They are both near each other, and can be done in one triangular walk.

Stay in Malham (very small) or somewhere nearby.
One other suggestion for the Peak District.

The area it covers is huge so you may be better concentrating on the nearest side to which you live (or which you are going to approach the Peak District).

In you live Manchester or North West go to the NW or West part of the Peak District (Glossop or Buxton etc)

In you live Sheffield or North East go to NE or East side of Peak District.

If you live south of Peak District go to Matlock or Bakewell.

No point in having to travel right across the Peak District if you are only going for a weekend.

In understand the Northern part of the Peak District is hillier than the South.

One extra "plug" for Gordale Scar.

This is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to in the UK.

Almost impossible to describe what it is like to stand inside it.

This picture gives an idea (just look how small the people are compared to the cliffs, and look how small the people are in the distance neer the waterfall)

To see Malham Cove on the same walk just adds to it. See this picture

This must be one of THE walks in the UK.
The peak district is very compact Loria, Bakewell,Matlock,Eyam, Castleton, Ladybower, all have interesting features and good walks. Surprisingly Buxton is not in the Peak District, but all these places can be reached in an hour of one another. Have a nice time!!
>Surprisingly Buxton is not in the Peak District,

Buxton may not be in the Peak District National Park, but I dont see how you can say it is not in the "Peak District".

It is certainly covered in the Peak District Tourist site I posted above.

Poster said they wanted to stay in the Peak District, not specifically the National Park.
point taken VHG. I assumed she meant the National park in Derbyshire, which is only an area of 500 sq miles.

Wow! Thank you so much, this is really helpful. I will show my hubbie and we will discuss.
Bakewell is jolly.
I have stayed at the Monsal Head Hotel and the Waltzing Weasel, both were excellent, but was some time ago so look out for more recent reviews
Er, sorry to be such a party pooper re VHG's post - but Malham Cove is in the Yorkshire Dales - not the Peak District!

There's another village in the Peaks where one of Robin Hood's merry men is supposed to be buried. And if you do go to Bakewell, don't forget to bring home a few of their famous tarts!

One part of the Peaks is the White Peak (limestone) and the other is the Dark Peak (gritstone), just a different kind of scenery - and, to an extent different kind of flora and fauna, depending whether it';s limestone or gritstone.

And perhaps you might be able to squeeze in a visit to Chatsworth House, if you fancy trundling round a stately home, it's wonderful.

Hope you find somewhere nice up there, have a really great trip!
