It's not my idea of reaching the 'peak'...

Due to my new-found enthusiasm for sport & exercise (yeah, right - it's for needs must, not pure enjoyment) the BF thought it a good idea to take me (dragging & screaming) to the Peak District this weekend for some 'healthy invigorating hill-walking'.

I am from Lincolnshire - I don't do hills. Slight inclines maybe, now I am so mega fit, but not fells & hills.

However, I have to go as penance for a rather super shopping day in Cambridge the day before and lots of indulgences, nice food & copious amounts of fluid, i.e. wine.

Anyone any suggestions where I can get a decent walk in (about 5 miles) which is not too taxing & will not have me on the point of a coronary or shoving the BF off the nearest tor point? I'm thinking the Ashbourne, Matlock, Bakewell area. With good pubs in the vicinity. And a good signal for calls to the emergency services.... ;-)

Blooming ''eck salla. That's some penance.
Couldn't you just take him to a nice Greek restaurant and then have a work-out in the comfort of your home?

Sorry, can't help further as I don't know the area x
Nor me, but you will need the latter part of your thread, plus constant places to rest. Downhill is good uphill not so good.
I've been to Matlock....I loved it. I didn't do much walking though...

I've been to Matlock Bath - just walking up the hill of the High Street was enough incline for me. He's bought me walking boots specially... I'd rather have had an emerald ring.....
Lol....I was going to say the high street is enough to be considered hill walking. Get him to take you on the 'mines' tour.....Say hello to John the miner....lol
I wish I could help but I don't know any of the areas you mention. Good luck with the walking though :o)

John the Miner - is he good at going down under?

I hate walking up hills. Maybe I shall develop a 'bug' of some sort that prevents strenuous exericse.....
Twisted knee at work might be a better excuse Sal?
They actually have cable cars....lol

Nathan did put me through my paces yesterday. I was sweating like a buckfummad by the time he'd finished with me. And the air conditioning wasn't working. So I could always claim dehydration & exhaustion. But then he would say I wasn't up to mega-shopping in Cambridge..... I shall have to put my thinking cap on.
My suggestion would be to park the car at the Izaak Walton Hotel. Then suggest nipping in for some pre walk refreshment. Then see if you can't persuade him to stay there.

Failing that, you can then walk along the River Dove for miles and miles and miles.....
Get yourself to Derbyshire.. there are some adorable villages there.. Melbourne, Ticknall, Ashby... not too taxing.. and there's a great little B&B in Ticknall (ask for room 5 or 6!) with the MOST adorable barmaid you'd ever want to meet.... shame she's down in Sussex this weekend to take care of her dear old daddy....

The River Dove walk sounds nice BM, I can dip my toes in the water & suggest a nice sit down which could develop into a long lay-down, then a snooze, then he would be too lethargic to find any hills. I could put a nip of alcohol in his hip flask (bobble bottle). Good thinking batman.
salla, I think a much better idea is for you to aquire a mountain bike before the w/end & I am not for 1 minute suggesting anything to do with mountains, no my idea is that you push the bike wherever HE wants to go, a saddle to sit on when you need a rest (frequently) but the beauty of it is you can freewheel down hills leaving HIM to catch up. Whatja reckon gal ?? Ron.
Good luck Salla, as a fellow fenlander (the best kind of lander I've heard) I appreciate your issue, yet: quite frankly you're buggered in term of "an easy walk".

I would suggest walking from the place you're staying to the car, driving to Monyash and eating a burger at the "Royal Oak" pub.

Serious answer (similar result): walk from Bakewell to Monyash - and have a burger: http://maps.google.co...0.132093&ie=UTF8&z=14

Lovely job Ron. I much prefer cycling to walking and freewheeling is quite exhilarating. And I can fill my panniers with all sorts of refreshments. Thank you x
Also Ron has a good point, although you don't need a road bike, get a racer. You'll be at the pub quicker.

Thanks hippy and Ed - have just seen your suggestions. Pub sounds great, B&B sounds even better! A nice lie-down after all that exertion.

I shall go on google maps forthwith.
The only thing that'll have you screaming if you intend to drive around Ashbourne/Matlock/Bakewell on a lovely warm weekend are the traffic jams. The whole world & his kids will be out there, good luck! Monyash area is good, you'll probably see my son out there. :o)
Sorry, this is all the way to the pub: http://maps.google.co....044118,0.132093&z=14

And there are plenty of cottages about in the area - though you may pay a premium this time of year?
