I know morning sickness often only lasts for the first trimester - but does it get worse during that time?  Or does it tend to stay about the same?  I'm just about coping at work at the moment but am worried in case it gets worse (I'm 8 weeks pregnant).

Morning sickness can last all 3 trimesters if you're unlucky. You can get anti-sickness tablets from your doctor if you're not coping with it (ie, you're not keeping enough food down). I don't think it gets worse as the hormone levels which cause the nausea stay pretty constant.

My wife suffered nausea for the first trimester, better in the 2nd and is now regularly bringing brekky up most mornings in her 3rd. She's refusing to take the tablets... (cutting off her nose to spite her face I think, but I'm not going to argue!!) Less than 3 weeks to go though......

Good luck!
I had no sickness with my first baby but I was sick for 30 weeks with the second! I must say though that it did get better and I wasn't half as bad later on in the pregnancy than I was in the first bit. I think though that most morning sickness goes by week 16 - half way there - keep going!

Hi HM, sorry to hear you are suffering.  Can only agree with both posts above....if you're unlucky, you can be sick right up until delivery day.  My sister in law had it quite severely up until beyond 26 weeks.  At it's worst, she couldn't keep water down, and was close to being hospitalised.  Thankfully, that phase didn't last too long, and she and baby were just great.  All I can tell you is that every woman is different, and you may well find, like most of those affected, that yours disappears by second trimester (fingers crossed!).  I'd definitely consider speaking to your doctor, or midwife at next appointment, and ask for their help and advice.  Good luck! xx

I was opposite to spudqueen, I had sickness for 7/8 months with my first baby, then none with my second. Good luck to both HM and OBonio with the babies.

Hi HM, I was sick for 9 months + on all my three.  Same level of sickness.  Have you tried sea sickness bands, you can get them in boots or a chemist.  You wear them on an acupressure point on your wrist and they can work.  They took away some of the feeling etc for me but not all.  It was enough to keep going.  Ginger is also good and there are homeopathic remedies if you dont want to take tablets.  I was told it was a sign of a healthy baby.  Dont know how true that is but they were all very healthy.  Good luck
I had terrible sickness throughout my pregnancy, the smell of cooking food (particularly bacon) had me running. I was still a chef at the time so you can guess why I stopped! Incidentally, in my experience it's called 'morning' sickness because that's the time of day it starts!
Good luck everyone with your babies.
Hi HM I am about 9 weeks pregnant, and had 1 week of being sick, in the hot weather, but its on and off with me, my problem is smells, I hope you feel better

You have my sympathy. I suffered morning, noon and night sickness for 17 weeks. As other people have said, ginger is a good cure. I always had a packet of ginger nuts handy - one in the car, one at work, one by the bed and lots in the kitchen! McVities' shares must have soared!

Ice is also an effective way of dealing with nausea. Suck on a cube, or, if you want to combine ice and giner, there's a very nice ginger sorbet you can get at the supermarket.

Another way to releive the symptoms if it bothers you throughout the day is try to eat little and often.

My personal feeling is that you shouldn't take anti-sickness pills. I don't trust them. My mum took a new wonder drug to combat morning sickness (it was introduced as a replacement to Thalidomide) and I ended up with a birth deformity. Must stress that nothing has ever been proved, but there's got to be a link there given that so many children of mothers who had taken this drug were born with similar deformities to mine. I think OBonio's wife is v sensible not to take them!

Hope it passes soon. In a few months, the only thing making you gag will be those toxic nappies!

I really feel for you as i know what its like. On my first son i was sick for the first 3mths and had a terrible time giving birth (38 hrs) on my second son who i've just had i was sick from day one until i gave birth but was only 1 1/2 hrs this time  if it carries on maybe it will be easier on you in the end like it was for me thats the only advice i can give you as everything i took came straight back up, mind you the only thing that would sometimes make it a little (not a lot!) better were xtra strong mints!    hope you'll be better soon.
aw wee lamb! When I was pregnant I used to throw up all day long for the first 3 months - took to wearing sea-bands which helped and also eating ginger nuts. Keep in mind that its just your hormones and its a good thing that you are throwing up cos it means your hormones are working in harmony with your baby. It will pass when you hit around 3 months but sometimes after you smell things that make you puke that other people cant smell. Your senses are heightened. Pregnancy might seem difficult at times but believe me looking back pregnancy and the birth were a piece of **** (excuse my french) compared to looking after kids all day. Ah mother bliss!!

Thanks for all your help everyone - I'm finding that eating every hour or so is definitely helping and I'm feeling quite a bit better.
HM it's good that you've found the best thing for you. We're all very different. God luck with it all. Let us know as soon as you know what you're having (obviously boy/girl not puppy/kitten as some smart alec is bound to say)! :~D
I hope things are still improving HM. I found that when I was pregnant I felt sick from weeks 8-14 but then it went altogether, if that gives you any hope. Also I found that it didn't get worse as time went on, it stayed the same or got less bad, and that because I was used to it I was able to cope with it better. Very cold water, frequent eating of ginger biscuits and bland food and keeping the window open for fresh air are my best tips! About the same time the sickness goes you'll get a lot more energy as well so hang in there.
