With tonight's MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards and previous BET (Black Entertainment TV) awards.

Why are these necessary when we are constantly being told to ignore a person's colour? If there were to be awards for Music of White Origin or White Entertainment TV, they would be construde as racist.

Come on baby lay your lurve on me....
Seasons in the sun - quality
Nolans
Showaddywaddy

Reverandfunk

Ballroom Blitz is a fine song, true.

But it's not a patch on Teenage Rampage.

That song rocks.

And Suzi Quattro was a magnificent performer.

And the lyric to 'Seasons In The Sun' were:

We had joy
We had fun
Flicking bogies at the sun
But the sun grew too hot
And the bogies turned to snot.

Classic.

Reverandfunk

I used to find Showaddywaddy quite appalling whenever they were on telly because the lead singer used to wear trousers which were unnecessarily tight.

It was just embarrassing.

Look, can we settle the discussion thus:

All music before Kylie and Madonna was quite rubbish and these two ladies are the only musicians still creating quality music today.

I think that's fair, isn't it?

the only kylie i tend to play is locomotion, better the devil you know. Madonna - hung up and like a virgin lol
Reverandfunk

Oh dear - even I don't like Locomotion.
I'm shaking my head in despair at you Sp.

I read that sp has described Showaddywaddy as 'appealing'. Must get my eyes checked!

Terry Jacks..oh dear me. Next you will tell me that 'Long Haired Lover From Liverpool' is a regular on your set list, Rev...lol
Music of Bland Origin
MOBO awards are racist, no question
So the argument is that this music is of black origin and ergo deserves such a name.
A few points.
Firstly its not for the person naming the occasion to determine whether the name is racist but those who take offense and as a white person I find the term Mobo awards offensive because it does cover such a wide set of genres and completely glosses over any white contribution.
We continually state that these music genres are purely of black origin despite the fact they are derived from basic pentatonics based off the western scales and that all of the genres that are covered sing in English which is most definitely of white heritage.
To say that white culture had no impact on these genres and that their origins have no white association is absurd and a huge oversight. Take Gigi for example, she is an Ethiopion pop act and her music in its construct, lyrics and language is very clearly of black origin and yet acts such as hers, which clearly do fall under the description of Mobo, are completely overlooked.
All of which glosses over the fact that black people are more then well represented in the charts today. Suffice as to say this racist attitude that so say exists actually clashes with traditional English attitudes. I mean in the past we had a reputation for being extremely polite and yet this so say extremely polite culture is now deemed to be excessively racist and so should adjust the foundations of its system to adopt would could be considered a mild form of affirmative action in the work place and in society.
Its absurd.
If this topic crops up every year then the name is, without argument, offensive towards white people.
That the term Mobo could be applied to the genres mentioned is not in debate but its hardly accurate and the English language is not so limited as to prevent them from thinking up a better name.
If we are renaming brain storms to mind maps and baa baa black sheep to baa baa rainbow sh
... to baa baa rainbow sheep I see no reason why a better name can't be thought of.
Even the urban awards would be a better name as that would cover a lot of those genres and be less offensive. Its non specific enough that they could get away with it.
What we have here is a clear cut case of an racially offensive name being used and a myriad of excuses being provided.
Black people have been in this country longer then I have been alive and I firmly believe in equality.
This name highlights the difference in skin colour and culture and only serves to promote racism in my view.
Its ignorant, offensive and it needs to be changed.
