I've got some old oak & elm furniture - not antiques - dresser, sideboard etc which won't clean up with polish alone. Has anyone any idea what I could use to gently get rid of the years of grime that's accumulated round the handles etc?

My dad was a furniture restorer and he would always strip off old polish and grime with white vinegar and a soft cotton cloth before applying fresh beeswax polish (not from a spray can from an old fashioned flat tin)
