Why the hell does it matter if the Queen's guard is made up from women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and black and minority ethnic communities.

Are we getting that short of the traditional guards, that the police are taking over the duty of standing in the sentry boxes of Buckingham Palace and Windsor?

"What could be more soul-destroying than to sit in a rusty old sentry box for hours on end"?

"SITTING IN RUSTY OLD SENTRY BOXES" Sitting, Shitting?????? It's more serious than I first thought.

Discrimination................!!
This story simply means that adverts will be placed in newspapers and magazines aimed at the LBGT community.

It's no big deal, the Met have been doing it for yonks now.

Also remember there will be zero impact on the royal family, and zero effect on the rest of us. It doesn't matter who protects the Queen, but it does seem like a good ideal for the security services to look to as wide a possible audience when recruiting.
I did Guard at Buckingham Palace in 1973, and my oppo, who i'm still in touch with, is Gay, and to me, and the rest of the lads, it didn't make a bling bit of difference.

I know things have changed since then, but we didn't sit in rusty boxes, we stood and marched, and they were made of wood,

The Police as far as I know, have always been at the front gates, all the soldiers are there for is show
In this age of enlightenment maybe they could employ some corgi f?ckers

I think gay people would make rubbish guardsmen. If any trouble kicked off they'd start crying and run away in a girly fashion.

I`m with ludwig on this one

Lonnie, In your day I bet your gay friend was `one of the lads`, put one in there now and he`d be more interested in what colour shoes HM was wearing and if they matched her dress

Mind you, I`m sure the rusty boxes would interest them
I know I shouldn't but I'm PMSL imagining a 'gay' salute.....
PMSL @ ludwig

Thing is, you mongs, they've not advertised for a homosexual.

I know this story pushes the button marked 'Outrage' on the back of your head, but try and have a think about what discrimination is and what it means.

Telling gay people that they're welcome to apply for a job is just an attempt to recruit from a greater pool of potential applicants. They're not recruiting gay guards at the expense of straight ones. There's no quota filling or positive discrimination. They're just advertising to a demographic that traditionally hasn't applied, meaning that they're reaching out to the largest possible audience, meaning that the standard of recruits will be higher.

Take a deep breath and read it again.

Don't be drawn in by the tabloid hysterics. You're better than that.

Now, calm down and think.

Your argument would have a shred of credibility to it if they were proclaiming 'GAYS ONLY' but they're not. They're just beefing up their advertising efforts among these communities. To swell the pool of applicants by attracting people who have traditionally been underepresented. Even the Express points out that: "Applicants will be judged soley on their merits." Even the Express.

Don't worry, the proportion of the armed forces' recruitment advertising that goes in Attitude magazine or the Gay Times will still be absolutely dwarfed by that in Nuts or Zoo, magazines aimed squarely at straight males. Presumably you're not going to assume they're screaming 'STRAIGHTS ONLY' because of that?
