Can anybody advise where I might get a splitter to run two computers from one modem?

Are you sure you need one? My router has 4 ethernet sockets.
Modem?

What sort of modem?

if it's an old type analog dial up one then it can't easily be done, if it's an ADSL broadband one then a combined ADSL modem/router is what you need, if it's a cable modem you need a cable router.
there is always ics - the drawback is you need Number 1 machine on if 2 wants to surf
