I've put on loadsa weight since coming off the pill I swim 50 lengths a day and eat very heathy but still am the same size. I used to be a 12 but now I am a 16. Iv'e tryed most things but I really thk it is an uner active thyroid. Going to my GP is a waste of time.
do not try to diagnose yourself, however desperate you feel, persevere with the doctors who can rule out various conditions, if you did have an underactive thyroid I doubt you would have the energy to do 50 lengths. be sensible and request a blood test and an investigation of your symptoms.
do not take specific medication without a diagnosis, it is very foolish and potentially life threatening.
Other signs and symptoms include brittle/coarse hair and dry feet. The only definitive diagnosis is via a thyroid function test (T3, T4 and TSH levels). The treatment is Levothyroxine with subsequent blood testsafter about five weeks to ensure that hormone levels are normalising.
