After a couple of pages into a print run my Epson R300 stops for a moment and then pops out endless sheets of gobbledygook - a jumble of symbols letters and numbers. I have to turn the printer off to stop it.

Any idea what the problem might be and how to rectify it, or do I need another printer ?

First thing that comes to mind is the printer driver.
Use the Epson install disk or just google epson r300 drivers.
Try that for starters.

printer drivers are not installed properly due to this error comes up while printing.

uninstalled the printer driver and installed the printer driver again.

check the printer spooler service and enabled the service.

What are you printing exactly? and where does it come from?
Your printer is near the end of its useful life - I've had two epson printers do this no matter how many times i re-installed the drivers. Epson are cheap printers - i bought a kodak printer instead - great machine.
Could be the printer lead. The control characters are getting "mangled". remove lead, thoroughly clean the contacts and reconnect. Or try a different lead. This used to be fairly common with the older parallel connection cables.

Thanks for the helpful answers, everyone. I've now reinstalled all the Epson bits and the printer seems Ok - at least for the time being. I take your point, Chopper, and I have been considering a Kodak. Which model have you got ?

Cheers.
