The garden needs to be tiered for a start icey, so will create raised row and beds as we go (we as in el tel who had a lazy day today and wont tomorrow!).

Lots of reasons why raised beds are good; they are about 6" deep, generally boxed by pine, filled with the soil for your crop, best if your garden has clay close to the normal surface, easier to tend, soil doesn't compact so much, less digging, tidier, paths stay clean.....

so they say!

How big is your garden then Ice?
Have you got a lawn thats on a slope or something?
Imho - no taters for me this year - maybe next. New veg plot and still looks a bit like the Somme!

Actually, a lot like it.....
Thanks rabbity. We have a smallish raised one down one side, but it's full of plants, not veg, and I've never questioned the reasons for it before. Our veg's grown on the flat, and I just wondered if it was a gardener's preference, or whether there was a specific reason for making them like that. x

Huge, Imhotep - you'd be on it for a week or more with your Fly Mo!!!!!! : )

Aah, as it happens Ice I have a petrol driven one with it's own grass bag.
It works on unleaded,so it's almost kind to the environment.
