My son who will be 9 in July has asked for a mobile phone for his birthday. Wasn't keen initially, but I can see the advantages as the summer comes and he wants to go round to his friends etc.

Asked him if there was anything in particular he had his eye on. At first he said that he wanted the name of the person phoning to come up on the screen - an easy request I thought, then today he says to me - I've seen the phone I want on the gadget show.

A far as I can make out, it is this one:

I think he even realises that the chances are nil! So, he says that he might wait till Christmas and ask Santa for it.

I think Santa might be getting killed before July.

Hee annie , still , I imagine that at aged 9 he will understand the value of money and know the impossible outcome of getting that exact moby . I would think he will be pleased whatever one you get him as long as it's a more up-to-date one than his last . God luck :-) xxx

Yes bigmamma he does know it is expensive, but unfortunately he still believes in Santa - who has bottomless pockets apparantly. You're right though, he will be pleased with whatever he gets, he hasn't had a phone before, but his best friend now has one. We are not big on mobiles in our house - I have one for work but don't bother otherwise - i'm either in or out!

Steve - i'll see what I can do!
Poodi - If it was only that then I entirely agree, however, on a practical side, I would like to allow him a bit more freedom and it would give us both a bit more comfort that he is safe and that he knows where to get me. I don't want him to be one of those kids that can't cross a road when he is 15, but at the same time, I'd like to know where I can get him. At the moment, I will allow him to go round the corner to his friends house, but if that friend isn't in, he has to come back and ask to go to a different one, and so on, backwards and forwards - if he had a phone, he could go to them all, then phone me to let me know where he was. So I can see the advantages.
If I was you I would get him a a cheap, hardy phone mabey a clam phone or somthing like that.

hi betty, yes I was thinking of something like that - any recommendations?

Ahh! poodi - I hadn't thought of that! Still too obedient at his age to think of something like that - wait for those teenage years though. He still thinks I am the ruler of his universe and the most beautiful woman on earth as well. He told me tonight that he is going to build me a beautiful house joined on to his so that I will never leave him and so I can help out his wife with their kids! He is going to build me a huge bathroom as he thinks that our bath is too small!
