Buenchico's Wikipedia link devotes only one sentence to the order given by the king of France to arrest all of the Knights Templars in the kingdom on Friday 13th October, 1307, on the grounds of conspiracy against the state, heresy, and demon worship. There are many books that describe this event and its aftermath, such as The Da Vinci Code, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, etc. It would seem to me to be one of the most sensible reasons behind the superstition.
dont know
I was told that it dates back to Friday February 13th, 1953 when there were 53 double decker buses end to end in a traffic jam. I am also told that it has been unlucky for a lot longer than that.

It is doubly unlucky if it is in the month of February.
It began on Friday 13, 1974, upon the occasion
of my first marriage.
It does date back to Friday 13th October 1307, when Pope Pious issued a papal bull (an official order) commanding the arrest of the Knights Templar. The French King, Peter the Fair, was the main person to enact this order, because he owed the Templars a great deal of money. The Spanish monarch, though, being indebted morally to the Templars, arrested them, charged and tried them for heresy - but found them innocent. This led to the Grand Inquisition, which focused on the Spanish Templars, and is more commonly now known as the Spanish Inquisition.
