I have worked on bank holidays for my employer for single time and lieu days instead of double time. Due to circumstances i now have to leave my job without being able to take the lieu hours i am owed.I asked my employer for the money that i would have been paid if i had worked the bank holidays for double time but he said he doesnt have to pay it and its my fault if i cant stay to take the owing hours off.Can he do this? It seems like stealing to me.

How much lieu time do you think you have accrued that you haven't taken over how long a period?

How much would it equate to in money terms?

What was written in your contract and did you have the variation (ie lieu days instead of double time) put in writing or have it backed up in any way?

Its about 50 hours. About 350.When i work single time on bank holidays it is e-mailed to head ofice(payroll) and they keep on record the hours owed.
If it's all gone through head office could you take it up with them, someone senior?

it was them that i rang up.Basically they said tough,if i am going to leave then i lose the hours owed. This cant be right can it?
Time in lieu is effectively extra holiday. When one hands in one's notice, holiday is either taken during the notice period or paid up by the employer. I don't see how lieu days are any different. Since they won't pay you for the days, suggest to them your last day physically at work is therefore going to be some time before your final pay day and the end of your contract with them.

your employers do not have to pay you double time for bank holidays.

Most companies i would have thought have a lieu time policiy where you are nto allowed to acrue it and it must be taken in the same month -does yours?
