Blacklisted?

My husband has been refused credit twice this week by firms he has used previously.  Six months ago he refused to pay an advertising bill on the basis that he had never agreed to an advert being placed.  The firm claimed they had a "taped conversation" and threatened Court action.  When he wrote requesting a copy of the tape, we heard no more.  Is it possible they have blacklisted him?  We have no other debts apart from the mortgage.  What should we do next?

As a first step I would request a copy of his credit record from a credit reference agency.
Following on from Hgroves answer, Equifax and Experian are the main credit reference agencies in the UK, so your husband should apply to both of these for a copy his credit file (just type the names in Google, go to their sites and you can apply for your credit file online). You will only have to pay a nominal fee of about 2.00 to each agency. Technically, there is no such thing as being blacklisted. Hopefully, your file might provide an indication as to why your husband is finding difficulty obtaining credit (surprisingly, it could even be because he has no significant credit history which can also count against you).  If your husbands credit files dont make it obvious where the problem lies, take it along to your local Citizens Advice Bureau who should be able to help you. (By the way, purely based on what you say, I doubt the problem lies with the advertising company. They would have needed to have been successful in obtaining a County Court Judgment (CCJ) against your husband, which you would have known about, its not something they can do behind your back.  The CCJ would be entered in your husbands credit file.)
