peugeot 406 clutch problem

i have recently bought a peugeot 406 and am having problems with the clutch. sometimes when i try to engage gear it wont do it. the clutch pedal sometimes is staying down and i have to release it with my foot .are the two connected?

Hi, Ist check your fluid, it may be that the thrust bearing need replacing within the gearbox, Its not a Big job but should you think of replacement change the Pressure Plate, ClutchPlate & thurst bearing, there may be some advantage in replacing the cable.
check the fluid and then replace the cable?? it cant be both hydraulic and cable. if its the 2.0ltr hdi engine its a ****** nightmare of a job, front subframe off, the lot and theres a specific way that you need to locate the thrust bearing through an inspection hole after the gearbox has been re-fitted. used to do loads of them on peugeot experts and taxis. would agree that ifs its hydraulic then check the fluid level, master cylinder and slave cylinder
