Modem stops when hardware removed

I have Windows XP Home and a Speedtouch ADSL broadband modem from Orange. If I've been using a memory stick or something, and use 'Safely Remove Hardware' before disconnecting the device, I find that the modem is often gets stopped too, even though I definitely haven't clicked to safely remove the modem too. When I use the net (Outlook or Google usually) I get a message saying 'port opened', but then it says 'no dialling tone' so i have to reboot to reconnect. Any ideas how to work around this, folks? The modem is plugged into a USB. Could 'Remove Hardware' be stopping all the USBs on my PC at once?

this is a problem ive never had before! lol! stupid computers eh? im no computer genius, but i have to admit i like the challenge of trying to solve the problem!

anyways, if i were you, do what i do with memory sticks. dont bother using safley remove hardware. i just use em, that remove it. simple as. try that. like you said, you might be accidently doing somehting more drastic without realising it by using saftley remove hardware.

ive been doing this for years and ive NEVER had any problems. no data loss or anything from my memory sticks. worth a try.
you are on track - remove sometimes stops the hub not the port.

if you have more than 4 ports .. they should be fed from different headers ... so using different ports might solve.

however as long as you check that the likkle light has stoppes flashing - should be OK just pulling the drive.

the best way is quite long winded

open device manager
expand the USB entry
there will be a number of root hubs shown
right click | properties | power management
and make sure the tick is out of the "allow computer to turn off" option
either try it out to see if you've got the right hub ..... or repeat for all the hubs.

then expand the Disk Drives entry
right click your USB disc
properties | policies |
select the optimise for quick removal

ok all the way out - reboot ... now you can safely remove

Cheers folks! I like the simple answer of removing the stopped memory stick or whatever.
I used to do that till someone said there was a risk of corrupting the data on the stick, though if it's not running and the light is off it should be ok!
