re answer from NEW JUDGE and put his answer to my friend and now he has said that if he contests this they can look his tachograph and they would see that after he went through the camera at 31mph he did increase after passing the cameras so what I would like to know is does the tachograph register your speed all the time you are driving as now I can understand why he does not contest it just doing 31mph if the tachograph registers all the speed.I just want to know this now for my own curiousity. Thanks

I think thetacho does register the vehicles speed all the time.

However, cameras are set to trigger in response to vehicles travelling above a certain speed (usually a minimum of the "10%+2" that I mentioned) so your friend's vehicle is most unlikely to have come to the prosecuting authority's attention at 31mph.

If it did not, they would not contact him (or more specifically the vehicle's registered keeper) and no follow up (using the tacho record) would take place.

Thanks again.I understand your reply b ut can't get it through to this person that he would not be caught at 31mph.Only way I could see that it is true is by asking to see the actual summons but can't really do that as really it is none of my business but it still leaves a doubt that he was doing more and he won't admit it why just tell the truth and be done with it.He just seems to be telling everyone the same story.Anyway thanks I have learned a few things by putting this question up .
Hi not read the whole post but here goes. Depending on weather a digital or analoge tacho was used will record the more accurate reading. ALL tachos read the exact speed the vehicle was travelling. As for reading the above post travelling through a speed camera at 31 MPH is within the 10% allowance given by all known authorities.
Although tachos do record vehicle speed and could be used in a speeding prosecution/defence, my understanding is that they are primarily used to ensure drivers do not exceed the allowed driving period, without the required breaks/rest.

Tachos only record vehicle speed against time, normally plotted on a disc. Your friend would be unable to prove that he was travelling at 30mph or less, at the precise time he was caught speeding from the vehicle tacho record (especially if he exceeded this speed, soon after being caught on camera).

Thanks all for your replies which I understand now just one more thing when he received this summons would it have stated on it that he was being summoned for going 31mph.in a 30mph limit?
