I am looking for a piece of land to buy then put a static caravan on for family holidays. What are the chances of gaining planning permission? Also, what type of land should i look for, grazing? paddock? Appreciate your help and excuse my ignorance!

Thankyou that was really interesting and helpful, I have found it very hard to get any hard information on the subject. I just wanted to know the truth as I don't want to end up with a field I can't stay in. Thanks again for replying.
In a Pickle's answer is correct in virtually all respects.
However one has to have one's caravan there for 10 years before one can claim an entitlement for it to stay there (not 7 years) and having achieved this, it is NOT then entitle you to put a house up in its place, It entitles you to a Certificate of Lawful Use for the caravan to be there - nthing more.
