I have been advised to give my 7 month old, 9 stone mastiff pup a tablespoon of linseed a day to prevent excessive hair loss. He eats it (and everything else) without any problem but it comes out the other end looking exactly the same. Is he getting any benefit from it and does anyone know if it works?

As far as I am aware there isn't anything that you add to food that prevents hair loss except regular grooming that is, my dogs all get a cod liver oil capsule twice a week to help keep their coats in good condition but they still moult like mad.
I havnt heard of using linseed oil, but having used a variety of coat supplements over the years to avoid excessive hair loss in collies I have found Yumega to work really well.

Hadn't heard of that, I might give it a try, one of my GSD's is long haired and I am getting enough hair out of her each day to fill a pillow, I'm surprised she isn't bald!

Thanks for you answers. I'll try the Yumela, never heard of it before. George gets 2 fillets of cooked fresh salmon each week so his coat is soft and glossy but as I've only had Rotties and Neapolitan Mastiffs before I've never had so much hair loss. It may be normal for English Mastiffs to lose this much and I'm just not used to it.
