Now I've seen it all - gravitate offering advice on dog behaviour!

Lip licking can be a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which many dogs suffer from. It can be caused by stress. Distraction is the easiest treatment, although there are actually drugs available if it gets very serious. Other repetitive actions can be tail chasing, light chasing, imaginary fly snapping.
Look up Canine OCD for loads of info.

thank you for your advise.

he has a small lump just behind his front teeth - could be causing his problem?
I'd get the vet to check him out - it could be something stuck in his gum or between his teeth, or even the remains of a puppy tooth that didn't come out properly any of which could have caused either an abcess or infection.
as Lankeela says it might be a morsel of food stuck between the teeth and/or gums.If you cant see and fix this then a visit to the vets is needed as he is obviously being bothered by it.

Good old Gravitate,forever 'helpful'

Thank you to all who replied to my question - just to let you know I have taken him to the vet and there is nothing medically wrong with him - and most likely a habit
