my mate's dog keeps licking and licking and licking the ears of her other dog. It is driving us bonkers, and probably the dog on the receiving end too. is there a safe deterrant / repellent we could try on either dog?

I'd suggest mustard or chilli paste, but the other (victim) dog would probably try to remove it.
have you taken both dogs to the vet to see if there is a medical reason for the licking?

she's tried to avoid that, seeing as vets charge the earth
Agree with woofgang. Has the owner checked the ears of the other dog as there may be an infection there that the other dog is trying to cure.
she has got TWO dogs and doesn't want to pay vet bills?
It really really needs a professional examination. Is there a dog rescue place in the area? Sometimes they have access to reduced cost veterinary advice.

If your friend can not afford Vet bills, maybe she shouldn't have two dogs. Taking on pets is a serious responsibility.
woofgang, may be not everyone can afford vet bills if they can be avoided.
cecil, avoiding is one thing, not taking the pet in when there is an issue and instead getting advice off the internet is another. I feel very strongly that if you have a pet you have responsibilities and one of those is getting medical attention when there is a problem.
Hard times can fall on anyone, even those who have had their pets for years, as it did for us, there is nothing wrong with asking for advice from other pet owners before rushing of to the vet.
