To quote... "What you had in the 1930s was all sorts of popular fictions were spread about the Jewish community that they were responsible for all ills that were occurring to Germany.

"They were made into folk-devils, and I think there is a danger that the word Muslim in the UK is becoming synonymous with bad news."

As a Jew I find this a rather insulting comparrison. The Jews weren't going around bombing innocent German civilians in the name of religion for a start.

By all means tell me I'm being over sensitive, I'm open to all opinions, but am I the only person who finds this over dramatic? It's ok for them to turn a blind eye to terror in the UK but don't make them feel uncomfortable about it?

Oneyedvic - On one hand no - why should Muslims protest about the rotten element in its midst?

On the other hand, like it or not, a newly formed, newly arrived community in Britain or any other country MUST be the ones to fit in. Muslims are currently feeling very uncomfortable in this country (I note that still doesn't prevent thousands of them coming here for a new life each week!)...If Muslims want to dispel the now quite common belief amongst indigenous Brits that they are the personification of the Bogeyman, they must improve their PR. It's rather like the "hearts and minds" the Allied troops are encouraged to win in Iraq and Afghanistan, surely?
And I've lived in France, where it was necesary to do groundwork in order to be accepted by the locals. As a guest, it was the polite and proper thing to do. It also made my life a lot easier, convincing my neighbours that I was not like the stereotype of MY ethnicity and culture, namely a lager ladette.
brionon Chambers Dictionary definition of protest

verb (protested, protesting) 1 intrans to express an objection, disapproval, opposition or disagreement. 2 N Amer, especially US to challenge or object to (eg a decision or measure). 3 to declare something solemnly, eg in response to an accusation
Okay Nikki - English people are thought of all around the world as football thugs. I am not a football thug and neither do I know or hang around with any. Very obviously, football hooligans are in the minority - though reading Italian or Spanish papers you would not think so.

How many protest marches have you been on to tell the world that not all English people are football hooligans?

How many times have people you know who are football fans gone on these marches?

Surely football fans everywhere know that it is the minority who are the hooligans - but still no marches / protests?
Oneyedvic - Regarding English football hooligans, if they move en masse to other countries, particularly European ones where the reputation is most acute, I think it would be a good idea if they DID do "not in my name" protest marches. Yes it would be an unfair onus on the law abiding fans but if they want to feel comfortable and distance themselves from the thugs, why not?
OK -Protesting in the Streets, then. when did Muslims protest in the streets against Muslim violence ?
Would you care for a definition of Against, perhaps ?
does this have to Britain only or do the ones in Bahrain and Morrocco not count?
