We are seeing signs of rust appearing on the exterior side of our radiators. The quality of the paint finish is not the best and it looks like a standard wall emulsion has been used.

Please can anybody advise the best thing to do?
A. To remove the existing paint.
B. Which paint to use for best protection protect.

Any other comments would be appricated

If it's as you say emulsion, then you can't get rid of it with chemical paint strippers, ie Nitromors. The only way is to sand it off, or if it's an old cast iron radiator have it sand blasted.

As for the paint, I personally use oil-based eggshell, the same colour as the wall it's attached to.
The best thing to do is have them sandblasted. Then they would have to be primed and a high temperature paint applied. This would need to be done by a professional service. At the same time, they could clean the inside and have them working like new. For more on heating and air condtioning go to www.hvac-for-beginners.com
i dont know how much this sort of treatment costs, with the emptying removal and collection afterwards. do you have to take a few rads at once to keep costs down ? what about heating in the meantime
however i changed my rads as i decorate each room and the new ones look great, more modern ,efficient and usually occupy less wall space, although this may involve some pipe re-positioning
the rust signs are obvioudly not a good thing but is it a sign of decorating neglect or something more serious and they need replacing
