What a strange, strange question......

It depends entirely on the nature and extent of the
heart defect. Some congenital defects have little
or no pathology, and require no intervention. Others
are minor and require only largish doses of Anno
Domini.

Others require surgery, of the open or closed variety.
Others are not consistent with life.

Your question is like asking :'Is a wound serious ?'
Answer: Yes. no, and maybe.
my child was born with heart defects - one of which was being researched some time ago. as scylax said - depends on the type of defect we're talking about .my child had surgery to correct the defects and altho the heart isn't perfect , it does its job and my child leads a what is termed a 'normal life'. more surgery may be needed later but over time and with more research, surgery can only be improved upon hopefully giving others with more serious conditions new hope.
