I am a 45 year old woman who has been losing hair by the handfull for the last 26 years, if I even run my fingers through my hair it falls onto my shoulders. My hair still looks healthy and full but when I ask friends and family they always say they don`t lose any, only the odd few. Is anyone out there in my situation. This is really getting me down as I don`t know if this is normal or not.

buster - I would definately get that checked out! It doesn't sound right. Apart from the hair loss, do you feel well otherwise?
Saw something on tv about hair lose being caused by a mineral deficiency .Go get yourself checked by doc .
I have always had loads of thick long curly hair since a nipper, I am now 36 and have also lost hair by the handfull each day since mid teens, If I brush it it comes out even more - I have just accepted this as normal for my hair as it never looks any "smaller" for my daily hair loss.

If yours is the same ie thick and full I really wouldnt worry about it that much, my Dad used to say that our hair is like Dogs coats - after all there are loads of different breads and some moult more than others! Not perhaps a comforting analogy but true non the less !

But obviously if YOU are worried then best check it out to put your mind at rest!

Thank you everyone, I am not worried as I have always felt in good health but I just needed to know someone else out there had the same problem, everyone I had asked in the past never seemed to understand and made me think that something was wrong.
Thanks.
Im the same. Apparently if your hair is thick and long then you will notice it a lot more. Im 34 and mines been like that since I was about 20. After the birth of m son i was amazed i wasnt bald with the amount that just came away in handfuls then.
As long as you havnt got any bald patches and your hair still looks normal then its probably just natural loss.
Of course, if in doubt speak to your GP.
I had a hysterectomy when i was 35 and lost a lot of hair thi s was due to hormon imbalances. Apparently it does go thin in "middle age" when womens hormones are in the change. I buy loads of hair products that give it body. It only looks thin when it needs washing!
