Also, I assume you'll also be changing jobs so you're sure to make new friends there too.
Where are you moving to?

I moved away from my home town 8 years ago. New job, new home etc. Made a lot of friends through my new job and even when people leave the company they have continued to keep in touch and we go out regularly.
However, I am feeling very homesick and considering moving back! Probably not what you wanted to hear lol!

When I moved in on my own, I got a part-time job in my local corner shop (just 12 hours per week). I got to know all my neighbours in the area and all my newest friends either work in the shop or are/were customers!
We go to the local pub once a week, have been doing so for the last year or so and now I know all the regulars in there as well.
I do have a full time job as well, but everyone there is either married and doesn't go our or they live miles away. The shop definatley did the trick for me - I wouldn't know a soul in my local area if I hadn't worked there.

I have always moved around due to my Dad being in the forces and then I was in them myself for 15 years. Its amazing how you will adapt. We have just moved half way around the world and didnt know anyone - but people generally make you feel welcome where ever you are. I am sure you find the same. Once you find work you'll start making loads of friends but ask you new neighbours for all the local info etc. Good luck with move.
Hello, Im in Newark!!
Quite right about the pub and there are lots of clubs to join depending on your interests. You could also join a social group like SPICE, see http://www.spiceeastmids.com/ if you want some platonic company, from paragliding to murder mysteries.
And if that is still too old-fartish there is a good student population in Lincoln 20min drive away (direct train too) that you could tap into.

Regularly attending a pub quiz is a good way of meeting people. Me and my girlfirend started going to the weekly pub quiz at our local, the same people sit in the same places every week and you always end up chatting when you swap answer sheets or arguing about answers. We've met some really nice people.
I think its all about going to the same places regularly, whether it be the pub, local shop, church, bus stop, crack den, whatever. And don't be afraid to smile and chat, I think that people are generally pleasant and everyone likes to meet new people.
