I used brown paper, folded several times, and a warm iron. The iron melts the wax which soaks into the paper. Obviously be careful about the temperature so as not to melt your carpet! It worked fine for me.

I find that layers of kitchen roll work better than brown paper - more absorbent.

Try getting the wax as cold as possible, With ice cubes,then just scrape it up.
