I have a 5 year old son and would like to have him christened, albeit a bit later than normal. His Dad is near on estranged although on his birth certificate. Does anyone know whether I have to get Dad's permission or can I go ahead and have this done on my own? My son has had chosen godparents since birth and they take this responsibility seriously, much more than his own Dad being a parent at all.

no you can have him Christened (and add a second or third christan name, but that would not be included on the birth certificatre.) it is a Religious Ceremony with no legal connection and so it is nothing that anyone can prevent or influence, if in the future your son wishes to change his religion he can too.
